Haymitch is the only living victor (out of two total) from District 12 before Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen. He won on the 50th Hunger Games by using the arena's force field to his advantage. Being the only victor from District 12, Haymitch is tasked to be the mentor to all the tributes who were chosen after him. For all the other districts there are two mentors each year - one for the male, and one for the female. Haymitch is the only one who has to mentor by himself, and year after year. All the other districts have a broader range of past victors to draw from. Because of the horror he experienced and witnessed during his Games, as well as the horror of watching every child he mentors each year being killed, he resorted to becoming a drunk and sleeps with a knife for protection. The Games have scarred him so badly he still cannot sleep without some fear of being attacked.

[edit] History

Haymitch took part in the second Quarter Quell. What makes this one special from the normal Games is that during this one, the Capitol took four instead of two tributes from each district. Haymitch allied with one of the other tributes from District 12, Maysilee Donner. Haymitch found himself at the edge of the arena and there found a force field, which pushed back whatever was thrown at it. He wanted to investigate it further but Maysilee Donner didn't, which is why the two parted ways and broke off their alliance. Maysilee Donner was later killed by a vicious pink bird and Haymitch was with her, holding her hand, until she died.

Haymitch was one of the last two surviving in the Games and the female Career tribute was on his trail, bent on killing him. They fought and both got injuries, and with the Career's final blow - throwing an axe at Haymitch - the Games ended. Not the way you'd think though, Haymitch avoided the axe and it fell of the edge, and, as Haymitch knew it would (but the Career did not), the forcefield threw the axe back up and it hit the female tribute's head. Haymitch was the winner. But because of this trick that Haymitch pulled, since it defied the rules in a similar way to Katniss' own method of winning the Games, President Snow got furious and ordered his family and girlfriend to be killed as revenge.

[edit] In The Hunger Games

In The Hunger Games Haymitch is first introduced during the reaping. As a victor of District 12, he is one of the only people up on stage, along with Effie Trinket and the Mayor of the district. He is however, extremely drunk. He is made rather famous by falling of stage while yelling at the camera, possibly directed straight at the Capitol itself.

As Katniss and Peeta's mentor, he accompanies them to the Capitol where they prepare for the 74th Hunger Games. However, he is so drunk at first he cannot help them at all. Frustrated, they ambush him on the train, which includes Katniss throwing a knife at the table, just missing his fingers. This finally sparks his attention, as he realizes that these two tributes may actually have a chance. At this point he starts to sober up, and while he does still drink a lot he becomes a lot more helpful and determined to help Katniss and Peeta as much as he can.

At first Haymitch wants Katniss and Peeta to train together. He puts a lot of effort into presenting them as a team, rather than two separate tributes who happen to be from the same district. He finds out about their current skills, and instructs them to hide them during the public training sessions (i.e. with the other tributes), and focus on learning new skills as well. Then during the private training sessions they were to show their best skills, so that the other tributes wouldn't know what to expect.

Unfortunately, at least at the start Haymitch believed that only one person could win the Hunger Games. Another disadvantage at having to member both tributes of the district is that Haymitch had to accept that both Peeta and Katniss couldn't survive. Since Peeta seemed so bent on protecting Katniss, Haymitch decided that he might as well focus on her as well, since with three people trying to keep her alive (Peeta, Haymitch and Katniss herself), she had the best chances at making it.

Haymitch seemed to have an unexplainable connection to Katniss, likely since they are so similar. During the Games, when Katniss was dying of thirst she realized that the only reason Haymitch wouldn't be sending her any water was because she was about to find it. She was right. She also knew that if she kissed Peeta, or gave the audience something to add to the romance story, that Haymitch would send them what they need. Further evidence that Haymitch was only supporting Katniss comes when we realize that Peeta didn't recieve anything from Haymitch (much less the expensive cream he sent Katniss for her burns) until Katniss showed up.

Haymitch also knew that Peeta didn't have to 'fake' being in love with Katniss, like she did with him. He knew as well that Katniss thought Peeta was faking. After the Games were over it was Katniss he warned about the stir the berries had caused, and that she had to convince everyone she was desperately in love with Peeta. He didn't even bother telling Peeta (who become upset about this when he later found out), since he knew Peeta would convince everyone of his love for Katniss - since for him it was true - anyways. Despite his drunkeness, Haymitch is actually a very intelligent character and is very often on top of things.
