[edit] General

Gale is Katniss Everdeen's childhood friend and hunting partner. They met during the ceremony after their father's deaths and bonded because of a desire to survive. Before the Reaping, Gale suggests that he and Katniss Everdeen run away together with their families during their hunting trip. Later in the series, Katniss Everdeen finds herself wondering what would happen if she took Gale's offer of escape. He is involved in the love triangle that composes of him, Peeta Mellark, and Katniss Everdeen. Because of the whole 'Star-Crossed Lovers' ploy between Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, Gale was introduced as Katniss Everdeen's cousin because it was thought that if people ask about Katniss Everdeen's best friend and find a dashing and handsome young man, it would ruin the only thing that kept the two tributes alive.

[edit] In The Hunger Games

[edit] In Catching Fire

In Catching Fire, it was mentioned that Gale and Madge Undersee were close friends, much to the jealousy of Katniss Everdeen.

[edit] In Mockingjay

Gale plays a very large part in Mockingjay, much more than in the other two novels. He lives in District 13, like all the survivors from District 12 do. In fact, Gale was largely, if not solely responsible for saving his people.

In the earlier books, Gale was always said to have been outspoken about the Capitol. However, in the final installment the exact extent of his hatred becomes clear. Among other things he spends most of his time in the district with Beetee working on traps, including bombs, to be used against the enemy (namely the Capitol).

It's Gale's idea to trap the people in the mountain of District 2 using bombs to create an avalanche that would block all the entrances. When the fact that some of the rebels' own spies were in the mountain, Gale claimed that they should be honoured to sacrifice themselves to the cause. There is no doubt, of course, that Gale himself would do just that. He also didn't want to leave them an exit, but he was defeated in that argument.

It is also very possibly Gale's own creation that killed Prim. He does not know whether it was or not, and he knows that Katniss will always be wondering about it. In the end, Gale went to District 2, and it is unknown whether he ever saw Katniss again.

In the end, it is exactly the things that make Gale similar to Katniss, if more extreme - his 'fire', his anger, his want for revenge - that take her away from him. Katniss realizes at the end of the series that she needs to be with Peeta because he balances her out.
