The Hunger Games is a science fiction novel written for a young adult audience. It is the introduction to the three-book trilogy known as The Hunger Games Trilogy.

[edit] Story

Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year old girl, lives in District 12, a small section of Panem. This young girl puts herself to the test by volunteering for the 74th Hunger Games - a competition where youth are required to fight to the death - in place of her 12-year-old sister Primrose, better known as Prim. The male from District 12 is a young man named Peeta, who comes from a family of bakers.

Throughout a long journey, the two work together in order to survive the massive Forest Arena that they are thrown in. In order to do this, they meet many, many friends, including Haymitch Abernathy, a former winner of The Hunger Games from their district and their mentor. With his help, they win the Hunger Games, and are taken back to District 12, where they expect to live a life of luxury. However, things do not go as planned and their story continues in Catching Fire.
