The Hanging Tree

'The Hanging Tree' is a song Katniss Everdeen learned from her father when he was alive. Her mother had banned it when she found Katniss and Prim making necklaces of rope while singing the song. However, Katniss always remembered it, and sung it for Pollux when they were in the woods outside District 12 while filming for one of the propos in Mockingjay. While Katniss did not sing for the purpose of a propo, it did end up being taped, though never aired on television.

[edit] Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to 'The Hanging Tree', as they appear in Mockingjay:

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man they say who murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where a dead man called out for his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be if we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run so we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree.

[Idk why there are two verses that are the same but that is how the song goes]

[edit] Analysis

Katniss Everdeen goes into quite some detail analysing the song in Mockingjay.

[edit] Banning

Mrs. Everdeen banned Mr. Everdeen and her daughters from singing the song when she caught Katniss teaching the song to Prim while they fashioned themselves rope necklaces. Of course at the time Katniss didn't realize the 'rope necklace' mentioned in the song was actually a noose, and neither of course did her younger sister. However their mother was upset and told Katniss to forget the song, then katniss ran to a nearby meadow and sat and cried until mr. Everdeen came to comfort katiss after that she never forgot the lyrics. Even though she hadn't sang it out loud since that day, she had it branded in her mind ever since.

[edit] Significance

As mentioned above, while the song is filmed it is never actually aired on TV. Therefore it could not be used by President Snow and the Capitol during the hijacking of Peeta Mellark. So when the people in District 13 were trying to rehabilitate Peeta, they were able to play him the video without him confusing it with other memories. He claimed to have remembered the song. Apparently Mr. Everdeen sang the song as he went into the bakery one day, presumably before his wife had banned the song. Haymitch Abernathy reports that Peeta said he remembered it because he had been listening to hear if the birds would stop and listen, and reportedly they did. This was a large step in Peeta's rehabilitation, because it was the first time he did not freak out at the mention of Katniss Everdeen.
