Panem

[edit] Pre-Hunger Games

The Hunger Games series seems to be post-apocalyptic, and the country of Panem is what used to be North America. There were many different kinds of disasters that North America faced, and Panem is desribed as having risen "up out of the ashes". Panem consists of the Capitol, which is where the control is kept. While the word 'government' is never used to describe the control centre, the equivalent to a government is based in the Capitol. There is a President who rules over all of Panem.

Surrounding the Capitol are thirteen districts. The districts are responsible for obtaining all sorts of resources and manufacturing all sorts of goods that are then shipped off to the Capitol. Each district is responsible for just one thing. For example, District 12 is known for coal mining, and District 7 for lumber. Since the districts only have expertise in one area, they have to rely on the Capitol to give them everything else that the other districts have made. Panem is connected by an elaborate train system.

While there were 13 districts, District 13 was said to be destroyed by nuclear bombing in the Dark Days.

The Districts' responsibilities are as follows:

District 1- Luxury

District 2- Masonry (not said officially in books, but later revealed.)

District 3- Electronics

District 4- Fishing

District 5- Power (not said officially in books, but later revealed.)

District 6- Transportation (not said officially in books, but later revealed.)

District 7- Lumber

District 8- Textiles

District 9- Grain (not said officially in books, but later revealed.)

District 10- Livestock

District 11- Agriculture

District 12- Coal Mining

District 13- Graphite Mining (unofficially, they also manufactured nuclear weapons)
