Madge Undersee was the daughter of the mayor of District 12. She and Katniss Everdeen often sat beside each other at lunch at school, since they were both really quiet and friendless, even though they didn't talk much.
 In The Hunger Games
On the day of the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games Gale and Katniss saw Madge when they went to trade some of their game at the mayor's house. She was wearing a dress, and when Gale Hawthorne commented Madge replied that she wanted to look pretty should she have to go to the Capitol. Gale took this rather badly, since Madge didn't have her name in the reaping anywhere near as many time as Katniss or himself.
When Katniss had visitors after she'd been announced tribute and before she left for the Capitol Madge was among them. That was when she gave Katniss the mockinjay pin, asking her to use it as her token - the one thing she got to keep during the Games. Madge had been wearing it on her dress earlier when Katniss and Gale had visited. Madge made Katniss promise to wear it as her token as she pinned it to Katniss' dress. Katniss agreed, since she didn't have anything else to take. Madge kissed Katniss and left, making Katniss feel that maybe they had been friends after all. The mockingjay pin later became the symbol of the rebellion, and Katniss herself would become the mockingjay. The pin itself is small, circular, made of gold and depicts a bird in flight - a mockingjay.
 In Catching Fire
While on the train Katniss and Peeta watch the 50th Hunger Games - the 2nd Quarter Quell - to see how Quells work. This is when Katniss realizes that Maysilee Donner, her mother's friend and one of the female tributes from District 12 was Madge's aunt. Madge's mother, Mrs. Undersee, hardly ever gets out of bed, and Katniss finally realizes this may be why. She and Maysilee were twins, according to Peeta. Katniss also comes to the conclusion that the mockingjay pin Madge had given to her that was becoming a symbol of rebellion, once belonged to Maysilee Donner, a tribute for District 12.
 In MockingJay
During the events of Catching Fire, while Katniss is at the arena, planes from the capital drop fire bombs all over District 12, killing Madge Undersee, her mother, and father in the explosion. Katniss figures this out in MockingJay when she insists on returning to District 12 and sees the demolished Justice Building.
 In The Hunger Games (Movie)
In the Hunger Games movie, Madge Undersee will not be shown. The notable event of Madge giving Katniss the Mockingjay pin will be given to her by Primrose Everdeen, her sister.
