Katniss and her family, as well as Gale Hawthorne and his family live in District 12, one of the poorest districts in Panem. District 12 is particularly known for coal production. The men of the district are the only ones who work in the mines and they do so when they reach the age of 18.Mr. Everdeen, Katniss' father, died in an explosion in the mines which explains why Katniss was later reluctant to cause an explosion in The Nut in District 2. Gale's father died in the same explosion.
 In The Hunger Games
Katniss volunteered to take the place of Primrose Everdeen during the 74th annual Hunger Games' Reaping when she was chosen to be a tribute, something that has never happened in District 12 before. Katniss, alongside Peeta Mellark and under the supervision of Effie Trinket and Haymitch Abernathy, finds herself travelling to the Capitol and away from her home in District 12 to fight for her life against fellow tributes and the Capitol as well.
Because of Peeta Mellark's confession of love for Katniss, she immediately became a favorite among the Capitol and was known as 'The Star-Crossed Lovers' with Peeta Mellark. And it's because of Katniss pointing her arrow at the judges during the test of her skill that she became the target of all the other tributes.
During her first seconds in the arena, Katniss had almost been killed by Clove who threw knives at Katniss when she tried to grab hold of the bow and arrows in the Cornucopia. Katniss failed but managed to grab a pack and run for the woods just before the Career tributes set their sights on her. In the forest, Katniss climbs a tree and decides to camp there, somewhere near below her, the female tribute from District 8 lights a fire which later sent the Careers on her trail. She was attacked by the Careers but she did not die immediately so they sent none other than Peeta Mellark to go back and kill her. This is how Katniss found out that Peeta Mellark had joined the Careers. It is later noted that he only did so to protect her.
Days later, Katniss found herself running away from the Careers and finally climbing up a tree. Cato tries to climb up after her but the branches couldn't hold his weight. Glimmer tries to shoot her down with an arrow but fails. Tired of 'playing games' with Katniss, the Career tributes decide to camp near the tree, assured that she will come down someday. That night, Katniss spots a pair of eyes in one of the trees, it was Rue, the tribute from District 11. She points to a nest a few branches above Katniss, from the buzzing, Katniss finds that it is home to trackerjackers. She then cut the nest from the tree and sent it straight down on the Careers' camp. During the confusion, Katniss escapes.
Katniss then forms an alliance with Rue who teaches her how to use grass as a medicine for pain relief. Later, they plan to destroy the source of food that the Careers have thinking that they won't be able to kill them all so their best chance at survival was to starve them. Rue was to make fires in different areas with the help of her endurance while Katniss destroyed the food. They made a pact to sing a four-tone song to assure the other that they're safe. Later, when their plan is in action, Katniss discovers that the landmines around the food storage was activated by the tribute from District 3 so instead she shot an arrow to a net that hung above the landmines, the net was filled with apples. The net broke, the apples fell, and everything in the area, including Katniss' arrow, is completely destroyed.
She then frantically looks for Rue and hears the four-tone tune followed the screams of a little girl. When she got to the source, Katniss finds Rue lying with a spear in her abdomen and Marvel standing over her, before Marvel was able to react to her appearance, Katniss shoots at arrow into his neck which caused his death. Devastated at Rue's death, Katniss covers her in flowers and by request of Rue, sings to her until she hears a canon and a hovercraft comes to get Rue's body.
